"Numbers don't lie" is a phrase that is used all too often in sports, but there is only truth to it. Pro Football Focus has shown that over the years, and again it works in favor of the Philadelphia Eagles.
If fans needed any more proof that Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown is one of the best in the NFL, PFF writer Lauren Gray has everything that needs to be known about him. Gray's article shared the data on who the best receivers are in the NFL in man coverage. Brown came in second with a grade of 92.4, 0.1 behind Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans.
"Brown ranked fifth in PFF receiving grade against man coverage in 2023 (90.4) and recorded a league-best 510 receiving yards.
He led the league in that mark again in 2024, catching 35 single-target passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns (tied third most). Brown also paced the NFL with 11 missed tackles forced on man-coverage catches while finishing in the top three in first downs gained (26), yards after the catch (189) and yards per route run (3.99). He ranked fifth in passer rating when targeted against man coverage (142.4)."
Was there ever really any debate about Brown's greatness?
It's no secret that Brown is among the best in the NFL. PFF recently had Brown ranked number one among wide receivers.
Before coming to Philadelphia from the Tennessee Titans, Brown was already really good with two 1,000-yard seasons in his first three years and a Pro Bowl selection. It wasn't until the Eagles traded a first-round pick for Brown in 2022 that anyone realized his true greatness.
Over the last three years, Brown is genuinely one of the best, with three consecutive years of 1,000-yard seasons and All-Pro selections. He's never had a season with the Eagles with fewer than seven touchdowns and can add two Pro Bowl selections.
The combination of Jalen Hurts and Brown has been among the best in the NFL. Their friendship can be shown on the field despite the off the field concerns between the two during the 2024 season.
Fans might start to see the central theme of Brown is greatness. He will go down as one of the best wide receivers in franchise history and is pacing to be in the same conversation in NFL history.
It's hard to cover Brown one-on-one when he's got the height at 6'1" and speed. That rare combination is not found often, but the Eagles just needed a first-round pick to find out how important that is.
Even with the dip in statistics in 2024, Brown remains in the conversation as one of the best and will continue to be until proven otherwise.
