Heading into the 2024-25 season, one of the interesting things to follow will be the progress of Matvei Michkov. The 19-year-old was taken seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the most recent NHL Entry Draft, and has the potential to take the NHL by storm. One of the bigger questions surrounding Michkov is how the youngster will get along with head coach John Tortorella and his no-nonsense brand of coaching. Michkov seems to be already off to a bad start.

During a Flyers scrimmage, Michkov, who's talent lends itself to flashy plays, attempted a Michigan move. Tortorella is on record talking about how much he hates the move and how it's bad for the NHL. Michkov's move caused Tortorella to look over at his coaching staff on another balcony. Turns out they were already laughing at him.

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Danny Briere recently said he's pumped to have Matvei Michkov learn from a veteran like John Tortorella.

'I know I've said this a few times before, but the chance to have him learn under Torts, we all know know that he's gifted offensively, very, very talented, but he's going to have the chance to learn under Torts to play the other side of the ice as well, and that gets me excited. He's going to get that base early on. I think it's just going to make him better for the rest of his career.'

Tortorella was apparently keeping a very close eye on what could be his future star player during the scrimmage, watching his every move.

Michkov has an excellent opportunity to become a star on a team that that is trying to re-tool in order to get back to being competitive. Again, the talent is there. But, it won't matter much if he's benched by the third game. The dynamic between Michkov and head coach John Tortorella will be a major focal point in the 2024-25 season.
