The Toronto Maple Leafs could look to add another star to their lineup, and one idea put the internet into a frenzy.
Sidney Crosby has spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but his name has come up in trade rumors as Pittsburgh looks to enter a rebuild. With Crosby potentially being on the trade market, Bardown sent out a photo of the star forward in a Maple Leafs jersey.
Crosby, wearing a Maple Leafs jersey, did look odd, and it put the internet into a frenzy as some fans wanted to see it while others thought it would be weird.
“I’d love to see it as a leaf fan, but that’s just not right,” a fan wrote.
“I would start planning the parade, naturally,” a fan added.
Crosby going to the Maple Leafs would be a massive deal, but many NHL fans don’t see it happening.
“That would be a Cdn legacy for him! If you think objectively about this. if this led the Leafs to winning a Stanley Cup (after 59 years), it would become the ‘next big sports moment’! Liking it to the Boston Red Sox & Chicago Cubs winning the MLB Championship after so many years,” a fan added.
“He would never wear this jersey lol. He just looks evil in it,” a fan wrote.
Crosby is entering the first year of a two-year, $17.4 million deal. The contract also includes a full no-movement clause, so if he doesn’t want to be traded, he won’t be.
Yet, if he is okay with being traded, Crosby being dealt to the Maple Leafs would shake up the NHL. However, he has been linked to the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche if he is moved.
Insider: Crosby Doesn’t Want to be Traded From Penguins
Crosby is a future Hall of Famer and one of the best players in NHL history.
Although he’s led Pittsburgh to three Stanley Cups, the final years of his career could be on one of the worst teams in the NHL. With that, his name has come up in trade rumors as many fans want to see him back in the playoffs again, but NHL insider Elliotte Friedman isn’t sure Crosby wants to be traded.
“One of the things I was told is that Crosby hates it when this stuff starts,” Friedman said. “It actually makes it harder to convince him to do anything.”
Meanwhile, Penguins’ insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic also believes Crosby wants to be a Peguin for life.
“He’s a Penguin, he’s a Pittsburgher. He’s spent most of his life playing for the Penguins. Really. Twenty years out of the 37 in which he’s walked this planet have been as a member of the Penguins. He’s happy here,” Yohe wrote. “I’ve heard many say things like, “He deserves to be in the playoffs! He’s Sidney Crosby!”
“No, he doesn’t. Nobody deserves to be in the playoffs. I don’t even know what that means. But you know what he does deserve? Given the player he’s always been — and more importantly, the wonderful person he’s always been — Crosby deserves to live his life on his terms. And he wants to live his life being the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins,” Yohe added.
With Crosby being loyal, him being traded to the Maple Leafs or any team seems unlikely.
Maple Leafs GM Open to Making Big Moves
After Toronto was eliminated from the playoffs, Maple Leafs’ general manager Brad Treliving said he wanted to change the team’s DNA.
Yet, the Maple Leafs haven’t made any big moves this offseason, but Treliving is open to making that happen.
“We’re trying to give ourselves as much flexibility (as possible) rather than spending and not addressing that need and having some flexibility if an opportunity comes up later down the road, whether that be trade or otherwise,” Treliving said. “That’s probably the path right now that we’re looking more closely at.”
The Maple Leafs have just under $3 million in cap space.
