Pittsburgh Penguins Make Major Sidney Crosby Announcement

Though the Pittsburgh Penguins missed the playoffs for the third straight season, that doesn’t mean captain Sidney Crosby’s season is over just yet.

The Penguins went 34-36-12, finishing in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division and winning their fewest games since 2005. And while most of Pittsburgh’s roster aside from Rickard Rakell (35 goals, 70 points) and Bryan Rust (31 goals, 65 points) struggled to put up consistent production, Crosby put up another All-Star-worthy season.

The two-time Hart Trophy winner totaled 33 goals and 91 points, marking his third straight 90-point season and the ninth 90-point season of his career. He was also one of just 11 players this season to hit the 90-point plateau.

And fortunately for Penguins fans, they’ll get to continue watching Crosby play for a little while longer.

The Penguins announced on social media that Crosby will represent Team Canada during the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Hockey Championship later this month. It’ll be his third time competing for Canada in the tournament.

“The captain is headed to #MensWorlds! This will mark Crosby’s third time representing Team Canada at the World Championship and first since he captained the team to the gold medal in 2015,” the Penguins announced on X.

The 2025 Worlds will end Crosby’s 10-year hiatus from the event.

During the 2015 World Championship, Canada ran through Belarus 9-0 in the quarterfinal round, the Czech Republic 2-0 in the semifinal round, and Russia 6-1 in the gold medal game.

It was Canada’s 25th championship. Crosby totaled four goals and 11 points in nine games during that tournament.

Crosby has won gold at every international tournament he’s played in for Team Canada including the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year, the World Cup of Hockey (2016), the IIHF World Championship (2015) and the IIHF World Junior Championship (2005).
