Potential Darius Slay replacement for Eagles just fell into their lap
The Philadelphia Eagles made work of their secondary as the older players left elsewhere and the unit stayed young.
During the offseason, the Eagles released Darius Slay and James Bradberry, as well as let Avonte Maddox walk in free agency to the Detroit Lions. They also traded safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans.
Going into the 2025 season, the potential starting lineup will include second-year stars Quinyon Mitchell at outside corner and Cooper DeJean in the slot. The biggest question going into training camp is who will play on the other outside cornerback position between Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson.
There has been considerable speculation about whether the Eagles will be aggressive and add another veteran presence in the secondary. They might have their solution thanks to a Tush Push foe.
Packers released Jaire Alexander and that's great news for the Eagles
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that the Green Bay Packers were releasing their starting cornerback Jaire Alexander after seven years with the organization. The two sides were trying to find a trade partner during the offseason, but were unsuccessful.
Alexander was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Packers as he has nabbed 12 career interceptions in 78 games. He also has had 70 pass deflections with a career completion percentage allowed of 57.8%.
The concern with Alexander is his recent injury history, as he has missed 34 games since the 2021 season. He has hurt his PCL, groin, and shoulder and suffered a concussion, to name the long list of injuries.
This is a risk worth taking for the Eagles, though, as they can lock him into a short one-year deal, which has been their plan with all free agents this offseason. Alexander could come cheaper since his injury history has been so full.
He's also 28 years old, which works well for the Eagles to still have a veteran in the secondary, but one who is under 30. They can use him as the outside cornerback to work with Mitchell and DeJean in the starting lineup. This will alleviate the corner position also when DeJean moves back and forth between slot and safety. It also gives them the veteran presence that is missing with Slay and Gardner-Johnson gone.
This is a move that smells of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. Sign a Pro Bowler who needs to prove himself and get back to form while helping Philadelphia get back to the Super Bowl.
It's worth the risk for Roseman to call Alexander's agent and get him to Philadelphia.
