Predators Reportedly Interested in Steven Stamkos

The Nashville Predators are reportedly interested in Steven Stamkos in the event the 34-year-old center reaches free agency come July 1.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun provided the latest on Wednesday afternoon.

“There are a number of teams that are lining up, hoping they can to talk to Steven Stamkos and Don Meehan, his agent, come Monday when the market opens,” LeBrun said. “Among those teams, I’m told, is the Nashville Predators who have serious interest in Steven Stamkos. They need an offensive upgrade for their team, and I believe that Barry Trotz, the [general manager], will want to be in that mix if SS goes to market. Obviously SS would like to remain in Tampa if possible.”

Stamkos just completed the final season of his eight-year, $68 million contract carrying an $8.5M AAV.

Stamkos’ offensive talent and leadership remain undeniable. The Ontario native has played a lot of hockey over the last four seasons, but his production has not tapered much. If Trotz is looking for leadership and serial winners to bring to Nashville, Stamkos fits the mold.

Age is always an issue with stars like this as they have most certainly left their best days behind them, but at a reasonable price, Stamkos could have a few extra years left in him to help pull the Predators into the new age of a winning culture that Trotz so adamantly covets.

Stamkos amassed 40 goals and 41 assists for 81 points in 79 games last season, which would have been third on the Predators behind only Filip Forsberg (94 points) and Roman Josi (85). 

TSN Insider Chris Johnston also noted that other teams, including the Detroit Red Wings, have expressed interest if Stamkos indeed hits the open market. The Red Wings will be an interesting watch over the next few days and weeks as they have begun creating salary cap room to perhaps make such a move. 

Personally, I believe Stamkos stays in Tampa after general manager Julien Brisbois finds a way. But crazier things have happened.
