Bruins pick up first preseason W.
The Boston Bruins topped the Washington Capitals, 4-2, at the TD Garden on Tuesday with 10 different players registering a point in the win.
Here are the game’s highlights!
First period:
The Bruins opened the scoring at 11:51 of the first period.
Riley Tufte picked up a pass from Jordan Oesterle and skated to the slot where he let a wrist shot off that trickled through Hunter Shepard’s five-hole. 1-0 Bruins.
Second period:
The Bruins extended their lead at 2:59 of the second period on the power play.
Fabian Lysell controlled the puck in the left-wing circle to snipe a wrist shot from the face-off dot over Shepard’s shoulders and under the crossbar. 2-0 Bruins.
The Bruins cushioned their lead at 9:46 of the second period.
Ian Mitchell fed a pass to Patrick Brown in the high slot where he let a wrist shot through traffic and past Shepard’s stick. 3-0 Bruins.
The Capitals got one back at 11:00 of the second period.
Connor McMichael picked up the loose puck at the goal line to lift a shot past Michael DiPietro. 3-1 game.
Third period:
The Bruins scored at 2:12 of the third period.
Georgii Merkulov backhanded a pass to Justin Brazeau at the paint who backhandedly bat down the puck past Shepard. 4-1 Bruins.
The Capitals netted a late goal at 19:16 of the third period.
In the slot, Henrik Rybinski hit Andrew Cristall with a pass for a one-timer low inside the right-wing circle. Final score: 4-2 Bruins.
Game notes
- Joonas Korpisalo wasn’t really tested in net tonight. He faced seven shots on net through his 29:39 TOI. Korpisalo made some nice pad saves on the penalty kill. Jim Montgomery said while he didn’t see much action, Korpisalo made difficult saves look easy with his composure. Montgomery was impressed with his ability to take away angles.
- Montgomery also liked Brazeau’s game management without the puck. He added Brazeau may give the Bruins options on the PK. Brazeau said postgame he was thrown into the PK tonight, but Montgomery liked how he fit into their system even though it was his first crack at it.
- The penalty kill is a place where the Bruins are looking to fill some holes this year, coach added. They’re also looking at Matt Poitras or as Montgomery put it, holding “auditions.”
- Poitras was really strong with and away from the puck tonight in his first real game since January. He had great positioning in the offensive zone and puck movement.
- The defense stood out against the Capitals. They were driving offensive plays and not afraid to throw some shots on net.
- And Fabian Lysell looked much better tonight than on Sunday. His goal in the second period looked effortless and he seemed to connect better with his linemates. Montgomery felt Lysell was more determined to get shots on net in this game and trying to create plays out there.
- The Bruins will head to New York on Thursday, Sept. 26, to face the Rangers at 7 p.m.
