Raiders Sign Former Steelers First-Round Pick, Release Young WR in Strategic Move

In a surprising move, the Las Vegas Raiders have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick, cornerback Artie Burns, while releasing young wide receiver Keelan Doss. This decision has raised eyebrows across the league, with many questioning the reasoning behind the Raiders' roster changes as they look to strengthen their defense and evaluate their receiving corps.

The signing of Burns, who was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, brings much-needed experience and depth to the Raiders' secondary. Despite his struggles to live up to his first-round status in Pittsburgh, Burns has shown flashes of potential, and his physicality and speed have impressed the Raiders’ coaching staff. Head coach Josh McDaniels made it clear that Burns' familiarity with high-level competition and his ability to contribute in the right defensive schemes were key factors in the team’s decision.

"Artie has the tools and the experience we need in our secondary," McDaniels explained. "We believe that he can help bring stability and provide leadership in our defensive backfield. His ability to cover and compete at a high level is something we value, and we’re excited to see what he can add to our defense."

On the other side of the transaction, the release of wide receiver Keelan Doss comes as a bit of a surprise. Doss, a promising young talent, had shown flashes of ability but struggled to stand out in a competitive wide receiver room. The decision to release Doss, who had been a part of the Raiders’ training camp roster, was made in the best interest of the team’s future and roster flexibility.

“We have a deep wide receiver group, and we felt that Keelan just wasn’t able to carve out a role for himself,” McDaniels stated. “It’s always difficult to make decisions like this, but it’s important for us to give our team the best chance to compete. We appreciate Keelan’s efforts and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

The move reflects McDaniels' commitment to building a balanced roster that prioritizes depth and experience, particularly in areas that require leadership and stability. While Burns’ addition brings much-needed experience to the Raiders' defense, Doss’ release signals that the team is continuing to evaluate its young talent and make roster decisions based on performance and fit.

As the Raiders continue to prepare for the season, it will be interesting to see how these roster changes impact the team’s performance and depth across both sides of the ball.
