Raiders' underrated defender is the key to unlocking an elite defense in 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders can have an amazing defense in 2024, just like they did in 2023. Of course, last season started slow, but once that switch was flipped, Patrick Graham was given full reign of the defense, and Antonio Pierce was getting the locker room fired up, they were a top-five defense in the league.

That wasn't a fluke, as I think the defense will start off much hotter than they did last season. But, the key to unlocking the unit as a top-five defense in the league is one underrated defender on the team. Every Raiders fan appreciates him, and if you ask his position coach, he is, in fact, the key to unlock that.

Nate Hobbs is a guy that needs more recognition.

“Nate is the key that unlocks our defense," cornerbacks coach Ricky Manning said. "That nickel spot is very special, that star spot is very special. And being able to play inside and outside is a unique characteristic to have. Just like Michael Carter with the Jets last year, a pivotal piece of that defense. That's what Nate Hobbs is, that's what the star position has become.

"He's the key to unlocking our defense and he's great at it. He can continue to ascend, and with his growth, our defense grows. Our defense grows and it allows PG, our coordinator, to call certain things because he can trust that Nate can get it done and get it communicated to everybody and we can work well together.”

With Jack Jones only entering his third season, and still have not played a full season in the NFL, Hobbs is going to be the veteran of the cornerback room, especially with a ton of young guys in there like Jakorian Bennett, Decamerion Richardson, and M.J. Devonshire.

Hobbs can do everything on the field, but in 2024 he will likely stick to the slot, as he is as physical as it gets at the position, and that's truly where he is at his best. If he gets going in 2024, we could see the defense at an elite level. It's going to be so fun to watch.
