Raymond Bourque: “Without Lane Hutson, the Habs Wouldn’t Be Playoff Bound”

The Montreal Canadiens’ playoff hopes have been revitalized, thanks in large part to a breakout rookie season from Lane Hutson. According to Canadiens legend Raymond Bourque, the team’s chances of making the playoffs this year would be slim without Hutson’s incredible contributions.

Hutson’s Impact on the Canadiens’ Success

While Cole Caufield’s 36 goals and Nick Suzuki’s 84 points have been pivotal, Hutson’s performance has taken the Habs to another level. Bourque is quick to acknowledge the defenseman’s influence, stating, “I don’t think the Habs make the playoffs without Hutson. The difference he makes with the team this year is incredible.”

Exceptional Rookie Performance

Hutson’s impact isn’t limited to his offensive stats. He’s not only been productive, racking up 64 points in 77 games, but he’s also shown a surprising defensive ability, making him a well-rounded force for Montreal. His ability to control the pace of the game when he touches the puck has made him one of the most exciting players the Habs have had in years, with comparisons to the likes of P.K. Subban and Alex Kovalev.

A Calder Trophy Candidate and More

Hutson’s achievements have Bourque convinced he will take home the Calder Trophy this year, as the NHL’s best rookie. The last defenseman to win the award was Moritz Seider, with Cale Makar and Aaron Ekblad preceding him. Hutson’s point production puts him in the same league as these celebrated players, and his play could also land him some votes for the prestigious Norris Trophy, awarded to the best defenseman in the league.

Hutson’s Historic Potential

If Hutson’s play continues at this pace, he could become just the third defenseman in history to win both the Calder and be nominated for the Norris Trophy in the same year, joining Bobby Orr (1967) and Cale Makar (2020).

The Habs’ future looks bright with Hutson at the helm, and his stellar rookie season may be just the beginning.
