The Reading Royals have extended their official affiliation with the Philadelphia Flyers, continuing their role as the NHL club’s primary ECHL partner through the 2026–27 season. The agreement extends a relationship that began in 2014 and has become a key piece of the Flyers’ player development system.
A Decade of Progression from ECHL to NHL
Since the partnership began, the Royals have played an active part in preparing players for the next levels of professional hockey. Over 50 athletes have moved from Reading to join the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL) or earned opportunities with the Flyers. Five players—Jacob Gaucher, Tyrell Goulbourne, Hayden Hodgson, Felix Sandstrom, and Max Willman—have gone on to appear in at least one regular season NHL game after spending some time with the Royals.
The success of the three-tier system is bolstered by its geographic efficiency. Santander Arena is located just 39 miles from the Phantoms’ home in Allentown and 67 miles from the Flyers in Philadelphia. This closeness allows for smooth coordination between coaching staffs and quick player movements, making it one of the most accessible developmental affiliations in professional hockey.
While player development is a central objective, the Royals continue to pursue competitive excellence within the ECHL. The team has qualified for the playoffs in 13 of the past 15 seasons, secured five division titles, and captured the Kelly Cup in 2013. Most recently, Reading claimed the ECHL’s Eastern Conference regular season title in 2021–22.
Community Leadership and Stability
The Royals are owned by the Berks County Convention Center Authority (BCCCA), which also oversees operations at Santander Arena. Since assuming ownership, the BCCCA has focused on supporting the Royals’ competitive mission while investing in Reading’s presence within professional hockey.
Looking Ahead
With the renewed agreement in place, the Royals will continue to receive player assignments from the Flyers and Phantoms, offering prospects critical playing time in a professional environment. The extension reaffirms the Royals’ long-term role in the Flyers’ organizational structure and strengthens a development model that has produced measurable results.
