“Really Shine”: New Orleans Saints 1st-Round Pick on Position Change

The New Orleans Saints aim to significantly improve their offensive line in 2025 after a rough stretch over the past few seasons. The new coaching staff will shuffle their offensive line for the second straight offseason. The Saints plan to have Kelvin Banks Jr. line up at left tackle while Taliese Fuaga will convert back to right tackle, his natural position, leaving left guard as the only spot in question.

Former New Orleans Saints 1st-round pick once again switched positions

As previously discussed on Gridiron Heroics two weeks ago, Trevor Penning will switch positions for the second straight offseason. This time, he will convert from right tackle to left guard. So far, Penning has done a nice job, receiving first-team reps with the starting offense throughout OTAs as he looks to take the early lead and start Week 1.

During Thursday’s press conference, Trevor Penning provided an update on his progress from his switch to left guard, via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. Penning believes his physicality, aggressiveness, and skills as a run blocker will allow him to succeed more at guard than tackle.

“The things I do well, I think fit better at guard,” Penning said, via Patra. “Not to say I can’t play tackle, but in the run game — especially at guard — the things I do well really shine.

“At guard, you can be more aggressive — obviously not super aggressive, but more aggressive than at tackle. You can just connect on guys and get on them early, versus tackle where you’ve got a lot of space between you and the edge rusher.”

“His play style, his physicality is what jumps off the tape, so we’ll allow him to play fast, free and confident because when he plays like that, he’s going to be a really, really good player,” Kellen Moore said, via John DeShazier of the team’s website.
