Before the Boston Red Sox went on a ten-game winning streak leading up to the All-Star break, there were rumors that Boston could move on from Alex Bregman at the trade deadline.
But, after their winning streak, and with the team turning the corner into a postseason spot, the outlook is slightly different. In an article from ESPN, MLB insider Jeff Passan had a firm stance on the potential of a Bregman trade.
"Now that Boston is firmly in playoff contention," Passan writes, "Alex Bregman is almost certainly off the table."
It's a clear stance from Passan about Bregman's potential availability. Despite the rumors picking up steam over the past month, Bregman's not expected to be traded.
He is staying on the roster, even if a contract extension isn't worked out. They could get a huge return for Bregman in a trade, but Boston is planning to hold onto him this season as they look to make a postseason push.
While there will be contract negotiations at some point, that's not affecting the team's plans in 2025. Bregman is on a three-year, $120 million deal, with a player opt-out in 2026. He's expected to opt out and look for a new deal.
Based on his play this season, where he was named an All-Star despite playing just 51 games, he's earned it. Before going on the injured list, Bregman had a .299 batting average and a .938 OPS with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.
While he missed more than a month, the Red Sox third baseman is still proving to be one of the better players in the league. His first-half production was incredible and is more than deserving of a new contract in the offseason.
And, with this update from Passan, the Red Sox will have him for at least the remainder of this season. Even if he departs in free agency, Boston will have the now three-time All-Star for their 2025 postseason run.
