Red Sox 'Asking Around' About 26-Year-Old Angels 3.90 ERA Starter

The Boston Red Sox are looking to land a starting pitcher at the MLB trade deadline. With the injuries to Taner Houck, Kutter Crawford, and, most recently, Hunter Dobbins' season-ending injury, the need is very apparent.

While Garrett Crochet has been dominant, the rest of the rotation has been inconsistent. Adding another starter would go a long way towards making the Red Sox a contender.

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI on Audacy.com, the Red Sox are "asking around" about a potential option from the AL West. That pitcher is Jose Soriano, a 26-year-old starter from the Los Angeles Angels.

"When he is good," Bradford writes, "He is very good. When he isn't, it can be ugly. But the upside of the 26-year-old is why the Red Sox have been asking around about a pitcher who still has three more years of arbitration eligibility."

Boston needs a starter, and while Soriano might not be as high-profile a trade target as Joe Ryan or Sandy Alcantara, he'd be a nice pickup for the Red Sox.

Soriano has a 3.90 ERA in 20 starts this season. He has a 6-7 record, and across 113 innings pitched, has allowed four home runs, 55 walks, and struck out 98 batters.

His 109 ERA+ is the lowest it's been in his career, but it's still above-average. Combined with his team control through the 2028 season, Soriano would be a lot more than just a simple rental option.

While Soriano would be a young, intriguing option to add at the deadline, there is cause for concern. Since June fourth, in eight starts, he has a 4.67 ERA and a 49-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

It's been feast or famine for the Angels starter. During that time, he has three starts that went seven innings, allowing one run across those starts. But, he also has an eight and a seven earned run outing since the start of June.

Boston would be hoping his ceiling is closer to the player they'd get. While he's had his struggles, the potential is there and is well worth taking a chance on. They're asking around about Soriano, indicating an interest in trading for the Angels starter at this year's MLB trade deadline.
