Red Sox CBO Craig Breslow Vows Aggressive Trade Deadline

The Boston Red Sox are scuffling. Losing six consecutive games, Boston has witnessed the disappearance of their offense. Despite the struggles, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is embracing the future of the organization as the trade deadline approaches.

Speaking to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Breslow addressed the team’s plan to be aggressive at the deadline.

“I think we’ve talked a lot about looking to the future. At some point, the future has to be now,” Breslow said. “We went into 2025 expecting to compete for the division and expecting to make it to the playoffs. We haven’t played as well as we’re capable of, but that goal still exists, and we’re not so far away that we should be thinking about 2026 or 2027.”

Breslow continued by pointing out that the next month will be pivotal in deciding which areas of the team need improvement.

“There’s a lot of games to be played between now and the deadline, but we are thinking about how we bolster the team,” he said. “How we do identify the needs that we have and are aggressive in getting those players to put us in a position that we talked about all offseason.”

One area Breslow believes the Red Sox desperately need to address is their starting rotation. The current group ranks 22nd in baseball with a 4.30 ERA, and outside of Garrett Crochet, lacks consistency.

“We have some depth built up, but whether it’s injury or performance, we just haven’t gotten that run of consistent deep starting pitching,” Breslow said. “Garrett [Crochet] has obviously been excellent all season, but we saw the type of team that we can be when our starters are pitching deep into games.”

Boston is currently eight games behind the New York Yankees atop of the AL East and three games back of the final Wild Card spot. Breslow’s decisions at the trade deadline will play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s direction and determining whether they can achieve the goals outlined before the 2025 season began.
