Red Sox Continue Winning Ways in Thrilling Series Win vs Royals

After a much-needed series win against the Texas Rangers to end their homestand, the Boston Red Sox hoped to continue their winning ways on the road against a tough Kansas City Royals team. After dropping a close game one, Boston’s offense woke up, taking the final two games of the series, ending in a nice weekend series win for the Red Sox.

Red Sox Series Win Over Royals

Hunter Dobbins sharp again, but Boston’s bats fall asleep in extra innings loss

Red Sox rookie Hunter Dobbins, who has had quite the start to his Major League career, put together another gem of a start in game one, shutting the Royals out in six innings while striking out six batters. Unfortunately for the right-hander, Boston’s bats failed to show up, mustering just one run in a 12-inning defeat.

Despite the loss, Dobbins has been a real diamond in the rough for the Red Sox this season. In four starts, the 25-year-old has pitched to a 2.78 ERA, an FIP of 3.38, and an ERA+ of 151. Easily being one of the club’s most consistent starters in 2025, the Red Sox will hope that Dobbins can continue his run of excellent form.

Crochet untouchable again, bats wake up in game-two thrashing

Game two starter Garrett Crochet continued his Cy Young campaign against the Royals on Saturday, striking out nine men while allowing just one run in seven innings. Boston’s offense supplemented Crochet with 10 total runs, five of which came via the long ball, with Trevor Story and Carlos Narvaez taking Royals reliever Ángel Zerpa deep in the seventh and eighth innings.

However, even with the home run hitters, Rafael Devers took home the player of the game for Boston. Devers went 4-4, including a double and three RBI. Despite his poor start, Devers has come alive over the past month. The Red Sox DH has hit seven home runs, raised his OPS to .888, and currently holds a 146 wRC+.

Like Devers, Crochet, who the Red Sox acquired via trade with the Chicago White Sox in December, has also been as advertised. Currently holding an fWAR of 1.6, Crochet has been the ace the Red Sox have desperately needed over the past few seasons. In 56 innings, Crochet has pitched to a 1.93 ERA, a 2.62 FIP, and an ERA+ of 216.

Giolito bounces back, Abreu homers again in close game-three win

After a paltry outing against the Rangers that saw him surrender 10 hits and six earned runs in just three and two-thirds innings, Lucas Giolito bounced back with a Mother’s Day victory in the rubber game of the series. The Red Sox hurler gave up just two hits and no earned runs while striking out five in six and two-thirds innings. A big bounce-back start for Giolito, the Red Sox will hope he can continue improving throughout the young season.

On the offensive side of the ball, Giolito was supported by homers from Devers and Wilyer Abreu. A star in the making, Abreu has completely broken out in 2025. In 40 games, Abreu has hit 10 home runs (the most on the team) and currently holds a .931 OPS and a 154 wRC+. The subject of several trade rumors this offseason, Abreu has established himself as a truly untouchable piece of Boston’s foundation with limitless potential.

Up next for the Red Sox

The Red Sox will look to continue their winning ways in their upcoming series against the Detroit Tigers, who currently hold the best record in the American League. Tanner Houck will take the ball in game one, hoping to continue his run of improved starts after his rough start to the season.
