Struggling center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela in not in the Red Sox lineup on Marathon Monday.
Rob Refsnyder, who has recorded just 21 plate appearances and typically starts vs. left-handed pitchers, is batting eighth and playing left field against White Sox righty starter Jonathan Cannon (0-2, 4.42 ERA).
The Red Sox host the White Sox at 11:10 a.m. here at Fenway Park on Marathon Monday.
Jarren Duran, who typically plays left field, will start in center field.
Rafaela homered Friday but he went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts Sunday as his slash line dropped to .209/.284/.299/.582 in 20 games. He has only three extra-base hits in 74 plate appearances.
Refsnyder has taken advantage of his limited playing time. He’s 7-for-20 (.350) with two doubles. The Red Sox haven’t faced many left-handed starters this year and so Refsnyder has one more plate appearance against righties (11) than he does lefties (10).
Today’s winner will win the seven-game season series. Both teams enter with three wins each.
Boston squeaked out a 4-3 season-series win last year when Chicago went a dismal 41-121.
Boston just has not taken care of business against a bad White Sox team. The White Sox have a positive-five run differential (29 runs scored, 24 runs against) vs. the Red Sox. They have a negative-31 run differential (39 runs scored, 70 runs against) vs. the five other teams they have played (Athletics, Guardians, Tigers, Twins and Angels).
Righty Walker Buehler (2-1, 5.23 ERA) will start opposite Cannon.
