Boston designated Heineman for assignment on Saturday to make room on the 40-man roster for left-handed pitcher Zach Penrod.

Heineman, who the Red Sox acquired in a trade with the Mets in February, appeared in just two games (three plate appearances) for Boston this year. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Worcester where he played in 51 games. He batted .252 with a .380 on-base percentage, .403 slugging percentage, .782 OPS, six home runs, four doubles, one triple, 26 runs, 26 RBIs, 28 walks and 32 strikeouts in 199 plate appearances.

The 33-year-old switch-hitter has played in 106 major league games over five seasons with the Marlins, Giants, Blue Jays, Pirates and Red Sox.

This will be his third stint with the Blue Jays. He appeared in 10 games for them in 2022 and 19 games for them in 2023.
