Ahead of the Boston Red Sox's highly anticipated series against the San Francisco Giants, they have made a major roster move. It had previously been reported, but the Red Sox have made it official.
According to the Red Sox, they have reinstated outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the 26-man roster, the Red Sox have sent second baseman and outfielder Kristian Campbell down to Triple-A Worcester.
The Red Sox made this move ahead of a highly anticipated Giants series. While this move had previously been reported, it's now become official. With Abreu coming off the injured list, he's slated to join a crowded outfield.
Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Ceddane Rafaela, and now Abreu make up one of the deepest outfields in all of baseball. For the Red Sox, this move helps fill in for Devers at designated hitter, as one of the four outfielders can now slide into the designated hitter spot.
Abreu, before going on the injured list, was hitting .245 with 13 home runs and 51 hits. He also had eight doubles, 28 runs scored, and 32 RBIs. His .792 OPS was solid, and he also provided plus defense.
Campbell, on the other hand, was one of the worst defenders in baseball. He also struggled at the plate mightily in his first big-league stint. He hit just .223 with six home runs and 51 hits in 229 at-bats.
His .664 OPS was one of the lowest on the team, and his negative 0.8 WAR showcased how much he struggled in the field and at the plate in his rookie season so far. He'll look to reset in the Minor Leagues.
Boston, following the trade of Rafael Devers, had a lot of eyes on their upcoming series against the Giants. The Red Sox got a bit of good news, as Abreu was activated off the injured list and is ready to go ahead of a huge series against Devers on his new team.
