The Boston Red Sox are set for the start of the 2025 MLB season. Late in the offseason, they were able to swing a big deal with star infielder Alex Bregman.
That move was the final major piece of the puzzle for the roster ahead of Opening Day. However, the Red Sox will likely remain active in trade discussions as the season progresses.
Last season, Boston ended up missing the playoffs and finishing the year with an 81-81 record.
Moving forward, the Red Sox want to get back to being a World Series contender. Their roster looks solid, but they could still be open to a move for an elite starting pitcher.
A blockbuster trade idea has been suggested that would land Boston a starting pitcher.
Jacob Mountz of FanSided has suggested a trade between the Red Sox and Miami Marlins that would send Sandy Alcantara to Boston.
Here's what the trade would look like for both sides:
Boston Red Sox Receive: Sandy Alcantara
Miami Marlins Receive: OF Wilyer Abreu, SS/3B Marcelo Mayer, SS/2B Mikey Romero
Mayer happens to be MLB Pipeline's No. 12 overall prospect. Romero is the Red Sox' currently ranked No. 11 prospect.
As for Alcantara, he missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. He's back and ready to pick up where he left off.
In 2023, he started in 28 games and compiled a 7-12 record to go along with a 4.14 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 184.2 innings pitched.
What Boston would really be hoping for is Alcantara to return to his 2022 production. During that season, he compiled a 14-9 record, a 2.28 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, a 4.1 K/BB ratio, and 228.2 innings pitched in 32 starts.
This is just an idea, but it's a move that would take the Red Sox rotation to another level.
