Unfortunately, the Boston Red Sox have dealt with some injuries throughout the year, including to young first basemen, Triston Casas.
Casas had a gruesome knee injury and has been out for quite a bit now, as he had surgery that was scene-ending.
After trading Rafael Devers, the Red Sox's plans got even more confusing, and it's tough to see where the team might go over the next few weeks or months to figure things out.
At the trade deadline, they’ll have an opportunity to move on from some of their top players, but it's also possible that the Red Sox will look to add talent and finish building their roster during the deadline and offseason.
However, for Casas, that might not be great news. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, even before he was injured, the Red Sox had some questions about the young slugger.
“Even before Tristan Casas was injured, the Red Sox didn’t seem sold on Casas,” The New York Post’s Heyman wrote. “They will need to replace Rafael Devers’ bat (even if they re-sign Alex Bregman — no guarantee). Alonso, whose wife is from Boston, is practically a Devers duplicate offensively (.859 career OPS for Alonso to .856 for Devers) who embraces 1B."
Since his high school days, Casas has done nothing but swing the bat at a high level. He's had some struggles in Major League Baseball, but that's almost impossible not to happen given how young he is.
Giving up on him now seems a bit premature, but this injury certainly complicates things. The Red Sox will have to decide if they want to go through the rehab process with him or look to replace him during the offseason, perhaps with somebody like Pete Alonso, as Heyman noted.
