Red Sox trade for catcher from Giants, DFA reliever
The Red Sox acquired catcher Blake Sabol from the Giants in exchange for international bonus pool space Wednesday.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston designated pitcher Chase Shugart for assignment.

The Red Sox now have three catchers, Connor Wong, Carlos Narvaez and Sabol, on their 40-man with spring training camp less than a month away.
Sabol, a 27-year-old left-handed hitter, has appeared in 121 major league games, all over the past two seasons with San Francisco.
He went 10-for-32 (.313) with a.421 on-base percentage, .375 slugging percentage, two doubles, five walks and nine strikeouts in 11 games last year. He posted a .235/.301/.394/.695 line with 13 homers, 10 doubles, 36 runs, 44 RBIs, 24 walks and 117 strikeouts in 110 games (344 plate appearances) in 2023.
He has thrown out just 12.7% of base stealers (7-for-55) in the majors so far. He has a 24% caught stealing rate in the minors.
He has slashed .272/.362/.454/.816 in 346 minor league games.
This is Boston’s second trade for a catcher this offseason. The club acquired Narvaez in a trade with the Yankees in December. Narvaez and Sabol should compete for the backup job behind Wong in camp.
