The Boston Red Sox are in a good spot heading into the 2025 MLB regular season with the returning production they have, players returning from injury, and key free-agent acquisitions.
For the first time in a few years, the Red Sox have expectations to really compete for an American League East crown, and also make noise in the playoffs.
Boston has MVP candidates like Rafael Devers and Jarren Duran, a clear ace in Garrett Crochet, and three highly touted prospects ready to make an impact. However, this doesn't mean they should stop thinking about the here and now and future prospect capital.
In a trade idea proposed by Athlon Sports, Boston sends outfielder Wilyer Abreu to the Detroit Tigers in a two-player deal that includes infielder Andy Ibáñez and top prospect Thayron Liranzo.
Liranzo is a catcher prospect who projects well at the plate and is just 21 years old, making his way through the pipeline. In the past two seasons in MiLB, he has hit 36 home runs and 46 doubles in nearly 700 at-bats. He was acquired by Detroit in the Jack Flaherty trade toward the 2024 trade deadline.
The Red Sox get off a productive outfielder in Abreu, who has been the subject of many trade proposals recently, and the Tigers get much-needed help at their last outfield spot. Detroit already has two certified players in Kerry Carpenter, and Riley Greene, but Abreu would complete the outfield.
Boston also has No. 2 overall prospet Roman Anthony seemingly ready for his MLB debut, and likely will get called up shortly into the season and is considered the future of the organization, so moving off Abreu for Athony's future stardom isn't a bad idea.
Abreu was productive for the Red Sox last season, hitting 15 home runs and driving in 58 runs.
