The Red Wings nab a piece of the President's Trophy winning Winnipeg Jets as they sign middle-six forward Mason Appleton to a two-year deal with an annual cap hit at $2.9 million per season.

The loss will be devastating for the Jets as Appleton manned one of Winnipeg's most effective lines alongside Nino Niederreiter and captain Adam Lowry.

Winnipeg’s third line wrapped up the season with 22 goals for and only 12 against over 544 minutes of ice time together. The year before, they were the team’s most effective trio, logging a team-high 682 minutes while allowing the fewest goals among any line in the NHL that played at least 450 minutes.

Appleton, 29, has solidified himself as a very dependable depth forward that can contribute 20-30 points per season. He will be a welcomed addition into the Red Wings forward group and could look to bring the same level of effectiveness to Hockeytown.
