The Detroit Red Wings have another vacancy to fill on their coaching staff after assistant Jay Varady left to join the Philadelphia Flyers under new head coach Rick Tocchet.
Varady, 47, spent three seasons with the Red Wings, who also are seeking a goaltending coach and video coordinator after parting ways with Alex Westlund and L.J. Scarpace after the season.
Varady and Tocchet have a history together. Varady was head coach of the AHL Tucson Roadrunners for three seasons (2018–20, 2021–22), compiling a 93-84-17 record. He joined the Arizona Coyotes, Tucson’s NHL affiliate, as an assistant coach under Tocchet during the 2020–21 COVID-impacted season.
The Flyers hired Tocchet on May 14 after firing John Tortorella on March 27. Tocchet resigned as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks after the season.
The Red Wings’ staff under head coach Todd McLellan currently includes assistants Trent Yawney, who arrived with McLellan on Dec. 26, and Alex Tanguay, who joined the team prior to the 2021-22 season.
