Reggie Bush explains why Aaron Glenn is exactly who the Saints need as a head coach

The New Orleans Saints are searching for a head coach, and Reggie Bush is the latest former player to come come out and endorse Aaron Glenn.

As the New Orleans Saints search for their next head coach, it’s no secret who former players want to get the job. Legendary quarterback Drew Brees recently came out and endorsed Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and now, former running back Reggie Bush has joined him, also throwing his support behind Glenn.

Bush sat down with DJ Siddiqi of Sports Lens, and detailed why he believes Glenn is the best person for the job. The Saints’ 2006 second-overall pick first pointed to Glenn’s work with Detroit, praising the defensive coordinator for getting their defense turned around, and keeping the unit competitive after several major injuries.

Bush described what Glenn went through this season as “the ultimate testament for a coach,” saying, “You find the real coaching starts when you lose good players.” Saints fans can certainly understand that, as New Orleans’ season collapsed after numerous injuries to key players.

Beyond being able to lead a depleted group, Bush talked about the importance of having an elite defense in order to be a contender. He pointed to the 2009 season when the Saints won the Super Bowl, highlighting how the defense was elite at taking the ball away and scoring touchdowns. Bush thinks Glenn can get the unit back to that level.

The former running back, who was also teammates with Glenn in 2008, argues that Glenn’s experience as a former player will go a long way with leading a locker room. He emphasized, “he’s a guy that will command respect in the locker room as well. Those guys will know that he’s not only a coach, but he’s a guy who played too.”

While all of those tools would make Glenn a great coach anywhere, Bush’s final point was that Glenn has the important ingredient to be a great coach in New Orleans specifically. That ingredient is understanding and embracing the culture of New Orleans.

"When you go to New Orleans, when you coach in New Orleans, you need to understand the culture down there. It’s not just about coaching the football team, but people eat, sleep and breathe the Saints in New Orleans. It’s a football-first city. They need somebody who is going to be able to lead not only the team, but the city as well in the way that Sean Payton did."

What better candidate than someone who has played in New Orleans, and spent years on the coaching staff with the Saints? Aaron Glenn probably is the guy the Saints want to land, but he’s a guy that several other teams want as well, so it could ultimately come down to who Glenn chooses.
