The Indianapolis Colts will be hosting Texas A&M defensive back BJ Mayes on a 30 visit, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2.
Each draft cycle, every team is able to have up to 30 prospects in for visits at the team facility. It's an opportunity for teams to do medical checks if needed, walk through film, and get to know the player.
Mayes measures in at 6-1 - 195 pounds. He began his career at Incarnate Word (2021-2022), played at UAB in 2023, and was with Texas A&M this past season.
The majority of Mayes' snaps this past year came from the slot, but he has ample boundary snaps at his previous stops. Throughout his career, Mayes has been a sound tackler and capable run defender by PFF's metrics.
In coverage, Mayes has had good ball production in his career. From the boundary in 2023 with UAB, Mayes allowed a completion rate of just 51% at 11.5 yards per catch with two interceptions and eight pass breakups.
Versatility in the secondary is an important element of Lou Anarumo's disguise-heavy scheme.
Then, in 2024 at Texas A&M and mostly from the nickel, Mayes allowed a 54% completion rate at 11.8 yards per catch with four interceptions and four pass breakups.
The Colts have invested heavily into their secondary this offseason. At cornerback specifically, GM Chris Ballard signed Charvarius Ward and also gave the depth a boost by signing veteran Corey Ballentine.
Also on the roster are Kenny Moore, Jaylon Jones, Samuel Womack, JuJu Brents, David Long Jr., and Alex Johnson.
The need at cornerback has now been greatly reduced, but the draft is about planning ahead, after all, so finding developmental talent at a key position should always be on a team's radar.
