The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly placed forward prospect Ty Voit on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
According to The Hockey News’ David Alter, this was an amicable decision from both parties to part ways, likely aided by the fact that the current regime wasn’t the one that drafted him. Standing at 5’10” and weighing 157 pounds, Voit was originally selected in the fifth round at 153rd overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.
He had not played in his draft year due to the COVID-19 pandemic cancelling the entire 2020-21 OHL season, but had amassed 28 points (eight goals and 20 assists) the year prior with the Sarnia Sting. He would go on to lead his team in scoring for two straight seasons with a combined 185 points (50 goals and 135 assists) in 134 OHL games while adding 22 points (five goals and 17 assists) in 22 playoff games to earn him an ELC that he signed on December 19, 2021.
Since turning professional in 2023, Voit’s career has hit a bit of a rough patch. His rookie season was ravaged by multiple shoulder injuries, one of which delayed the start of his campaign and the other prematurely ended it. It resulted in him appearing in only six games split between the ECHL and AHL, though he spent the majority of it with the Newfoundland Growlers.
The 2024-25 campaign was a mostly healthy one for Voit, spending the entire year with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones. He was unable to take a significant step in his development as he amassed 37 points (eight goals and 29 assists) in 63 games, which placed him fifth on the team in scoring. Although it’s a fairly modest production for a winger in his first full season, Voit was overshadowed by Chas Sharpe, who recorded 46 points (25 goals and 21 assists) as a defenceman.
Presuming Voit clears unconditional waivers on Wednesday, his subsequent contract termination would move the Leafs’ total number of contracts down to 41 out of 50.
