Reports: Former Blackhawk Patrick Kane Staying With Detroit

The future Hall-of-Famer could be remaining with the Red Wings.

Former Blackhawk star Patrick Kane reportedly is set to return to the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent on a one-year contract.

The 35-year-old Kane spent his first 16 seasons with the Blackhawks, joining Chicago as the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft. The Buffalo, New York native is second only the legendary Stan Mikita on the Blackhawks all-time points list with 1,225.

Kane helped lead Chicago to Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015. But the Blackhawks traded him to the New York Rangers on Feb. 28, 2023 as the flashy winger's eight-year, $84 million contract was running out and he was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

The rebuilding Blackhawks also wanted to move on from Kane and longtime captain Jonathan Toews with a new leadership core.

Kane and the Rangers were eliminated by New Jersey in the opening playoff round in 2023. Slowed by what he called a nagging injury, Kane underwent hip resurfacing surgery in Summer 2023 and dove into his rehabilitation for a successful outcome.

He signed as a one-year contract, $2.75 million AAV contract with Detroit on Nov. 28, 2023, then joined the Red Wings on the ice on Dec. 7. Kane went on to score 20 goals and 27 assist in 50 games for Detroit, including an overtime game-winner in his return to the United Center on Feb. 25.

The Red Wings missed the playoffs on the last day of the season, falling short in a tiebreaker with Washington. It wasn't known if they would have cap space to retain Kane and several other veterans to drive another run to the postseason.

The compensation in Kane's new deal with Detroit is not yet known.
