When Kandi Burruss opened up Blaze Steak and Seafood, she probably had no idea how much trouble it would cause her and husband, Todd Tucker. The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s couple opened the restaurant in 2020. Since then, they’ve endured failed health inspections, numerous customer complaints, and a shooting between coworkers.
The latest controversy surrounding the troubled eatery is a massive lawsuit over unpaid rent and repairs. The restaurant is currently closed. Now, new court records show that Kandi and her legal team are fighting to get it reopened.
According to court records reviewed by Us Weekly, Montego Pacific, the landlord for Blaze, sued Kandi and Todd’s restaurant group back in March. At the time, they accused the RHOA couple of owing unpaid rent. They also accused the couple of neglecting necessary repairs on the building.
Meanwhile, Kandi argued that the repairs were the landlord’s responsibility. They’ve been in a deadlock ever since. The landlord wound up occupying the building to make the repairs, leaving Blaze in limbo.
While waiting for the next steps in the lawsuit, Kandi said she received a letter from the landlord demanding that she fork over the unpaid money. They also threatened legal action against her, despite the fact that they’re already in the middle of a lawsuit.
The letter from the landlord arrived on June 13, and it left Kandi and her legal team furious. They asked the court for an emergency hearing on the matter, claiming that the landlord sent the letter with the “sole purpose of harassing and intimidating” the RHOA star.
Her lawyer explained, “It is unethical and against public policy for a party and specifically counsel for a party engaged in litigation to threaten criminal proceedings or judicial proceedings for the sole purpose of attempting to gain leverage.”
A judge rejected Kandi’s request for an emergency hearing, which means the lawsuit is still pending. The landlord saw that as a victory, and they’re allegedly refusing to accept any payments from Kandi unless rent, repairs, and interest are all paid in full. With that in mind, we can assume Blaze won’t be reopening anytime soon.
