RHOA’s Angela Oakley Recalls Separation From Husband Charles Oakley

It’s not easy being Charles Oakley’s wife. On The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16, Episode 3, Angela Oakley explained how she learned that lesson the hard way, just one year into their marriage.

The two tied the knot in 2016, but in 2017, the NBA legend was involved in an altercation with security guards at Madison Square Garden. It happened during a New York Knicks game, and he wound up getting arrested on three counts of assault and one count of criminal trespass. Although the charges were eventually dropped, the situation didn’t bode well for their new marriage.

In the RHOA episode “High Notes and Cheap Shots,” Angela reflected on how the legal trouble surrounding Charles impacted their marriage. They wound up living separately, despite just tying the knot. Angela called it a “very, very rough time.”

“We were newly married,” Angela recalled. “He needed to heal, and I couldn’t heal him during this time. I was just like, ‘You know what? We’re going to try to work through this at a distance.’ And we did live separately.”

Now, the couple is preparing to celebrate a decade of marriage. Angela is hyperfocused on getting them through the next ten years. She has them signed up for a counselor, which costs them $3,000 a month. She wants to plan a vow renewal while also flipping houses. It’s a lot, and Charles seems unsure about all of it.

“Charles is holding our vow renewal over my head because he feels like we spent all this money on these houses,” the RHOA newbie confessed. “[He thinks], ‘Let’s handle this first, and then we can jump into something else.’”
