Rob Lowe Says He's 'Just Waiting' To Reprise 9-1-1 Role in Spinoff Series

Hollywood icon Rob Lowe is open to returning to the 9-1-1 franchise. However, the actor says he will have to check with his brother, Chad Lowe, who works on the series.

Speaking via Deadline, Lowe addressed a potential return to his iconic role as Captain Owen Strand in the upcoming 9-1-1: Nashville spinoff series. "Well, I'll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother. See, all my family are gatekeepers to my own future business now," he joked. "Chad Lowe is the executive producer and director of 9-1-1: Nashville. And so I'm just waiting for my phone to ring.I mean, you know, I hired him on Lone Star. I think turnabout is fair play."

Lowe previously starred as Captain Owen Strand of Fire Station 126 in Austin, Texas throughout the entirety of 9-1-1: Lone Star's five-season run. A spinoff of the main 9-1-1 series, the show maintained the same basic setup as the former, all while introducing its own unique set of potential catastrophes for its core cast to overcome. 9-1-1: Lone Star featured an all-star ensemble cast including Liv Tyler, Ronen Rubinstein, Jim Parrack, Gina Torres, Sierra McClain, Rafael L. Silva, Billy Burke, and Natacha Karam.

9-1-1: Lone Star amassed 72 episodes in total. Among these were two crossovers with the main 9-1-1 series, with stars Oliver Stark, Ryan Guzman, and Aisha Hinds all making the jump to 9-1-1: Lone Star's Season 2 crossover and Angela Bassett joining for its Season 3 crossover. Despite these critically acclaimed episodes and consistently favorable reviews for the series, 9-1-1: Lone Star was canceled after its fifth season. In 2024, Lowe noted that the cast and crew went into Season 5 "pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season, so that affected everything we did."

While 9-1-1 is heading into its ninth season, which will continue charting the impact of the shocking death of Peter Krause's Captain Bobby Nash in Season 8, the franchise as a whole will be expanding with the debut of 9-1-1: Nashville in 2025. The next spinoff series will be led by Chris O'Donnell in the role of veteran firefighter Captain Don Sharpe.

The series' leading cast is rounded out by Jessica Capshaw, Hailey Kilgore, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz, Hunter McVey, and country music icon LeAnn Rimes. In May, ABC President Craig Erwich explained that, while the decision to kill off Bobby on 9-1-1 was up to the series' creatives, it would give the new show "a lot of momentum" and "be a great lead-off for 9-1-1: Nashville" which is being given priority.

9-1-1: Nashville premieres on Sept. 1 on ABC.
