Roxborough Development Corporation partners with Philadelphia Flyers on celebration of local sports

The Roxborough Development Corporation recently partnered with the Philadelphia Flyers on Fandom Friday, a celebration of local sports that served as the RDC’s third Fridays in the Pocket Park event of 2024.

As the Mitchell Street Phillbillies set the mood with rousing stadium tunes, event attendees connected with the Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative and Up2Us Sports.

Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative is a non-profit that fosters equitable access to sports for local kids, many of whom reside in Roxborough.

A little further down the Pocket Park, representatives from the Philadelphia Flyers engaged community members with games and free Flyers merch, including Gritty-orange sunglasses.

The Flyers weren’t the only local team celebrating Fandom Friday. The Philadelphia Eagles donated certified autographed memorabilia to be raffled off alongside gift cards donated by Roxborough businesses (including Eda’s Pizzeria) in the RDC’s ongoing Weekend Warrior Raffle, which runs through September 16.

A portion of all raffle proceeds will benefit the Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative. Contact [email protected] to purchase tickets.

As the festivities continued into the night, New Ridge Brewing Company offered up refreshing summer beverages and delicious plates in their beer garden.

Li Ping Corn Company also stopped by with bushels of summer corn, which they roasted in their on-site oven until piping hot.

The Fridays in the Pocket Park event series was made possible by generous sponsors, including MGMT Residential, European Wax Center, New Ridge Brewing Company, Independence Blue Cross, and Renewal by Andersen.

For those who missed Fandom Friday, the Roxborough Development Corporation’s 2024 event calendar continues with Slip Into Fall (Saturday, September 20th), Roxtoberfest (Saturday, October 5), Happy Holidays (December 6-7), and the Roots of Roxborough event series (August 24th with the Friends of Kelly Park in the Roxborough Pocket Park, and September 14 at the Roxborough Home for Women).
