Ryan Reynolds is working on a non-Marvel project with Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy. Reynolds served as a producer and co-wrote Deadpool & Wolverine with Levy, which grossed $636 million domestically. The two have previously collaborated on 2021's action comedy Free Guy and 2022's sci-fi The Adam Project. Reynolds and Jackson met on the set of 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine and have enjoyed 17 years of friendship.
In an interview with Variety, Reynolds reveals that he's "spending the year writing" an untitled non-Marvel project with both Jackman and Levy involved. The actor further teases that it's a project for himself. Though plot details are tightly under wraps, Reynolds is looking forward to spending the next 12 months working on this project. Check out what he said:
I’m spending the year writing. I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.
What This Means For Reynolds' Untitled Project
A Passion Project With Strong Leads
This upcoming project will mark the fourth collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds. The two have a track record of creating box office favorites. With Hugh Jackman onboard, Deadpool & Wolverine marked the duo's biggest success to date by tapping into the love and hate on-screen dynamics between Reynolds and Jackman. By involving Jackman, Levy and Reynolds' next project will likely feature this intriguing dynamic on-screen again.
Reynolds' comment also indicates that his next project will be personal, teasing something very special, especially with both Levy and Jackman onboard. Given that both Reynolds and Jackman have bulked up for Deadpool & Wolverine and are both known for starring in action movies, it's likely that the new project will incorporate some action elements.
Our Take on Deadpool & Wolverine Trio's Next Adventure
We Need More Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds Together
Deadpool and Wolverine's first encounter in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine is messy, but the pair were able to build chemistry in limited scenes. It seems to have set the tone for their future encounters. In Deadpool & Wolverine, they pick up the fight they left off years ago. However, this time, the dynamics shift from being pure feud to something with a bit of a love/hate relationship.
While their next project won't be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, moviegoers still want to see the pair together, even if they may be under other titles and names. Reynold and Jackman continuing their on-screen fun-filled antagonism is exactly what viewers want after Deadpool & Wolverine. It'd be a shame for Deadpool 3 to be their last adventure together. Their journey has just gotten started, and thankfully, Reynolds gets it.
