Sabres Have Excellent PTO Target in Veteran Forward

The Buffalo Sabres have had a busy offseason. They notably boosted their forward depth, adding Jason Zucker, Sam Lafferty, Beck Malenstyn, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, and Ryan McLeod. However, even with their several additions, they would still be wise to add one more skilled winger before the start of the season.

At this juncture of the offseason, the chances of the Sabres landing a true top-six winger are notably lower than before. Yet, while this is the case, the free-agent market still offers some solid players who could be worth signing to a professional tryout (PTO) contract. One name who stands out in particular is veteran winger Max Pacioretty.

Pacioretty, 35, is one of the top free-agent forwards still available at this point of the offseason. However, this should change when noting that he is a former All-Star and captain who still has the potential to work in a middle-six role. With the Sabres needing more offense, taking a flier on Pacioretty on a PTO could be worthwhile.

Pacioretty appeared in 47 games this past season with the Washington Capitals, recording four goals and 23 points. While it was a down year for him in the goal department, he still produced nearly a point every two games. It is also important to note that he returned from his second Achilles tear since the 2022 NHL Offseason, so he naturally had some rust to shake off. Thus, he could bounce back after another offseason of rest if given another opportunity.

Furthermore, considering that Pacioretty has scored at least 20 goals in eight seasons and at least 30 in six seasons, there is reason to believe that he could increase his production if he earns another deal.

Ultimately, with the Sabres needing another skilled winger, it would not be a bad idea for them to take a chance on Pacioretty with a PTO. He would give the Sabres another veteran option for their middle six and power play if he successfully earned a contract through it.
