The New Orleans Saints will carve out their roster over the next few months, ahead of next season. Following the 2025 NFL Draft, they could still use another wide receiver option for Kellen Moore.
The young head coach has always used a plethora of body types at wideout for his offenses, and New Orleans lacks that versatility right now. The Green Bay Packers have a potential WR trade target that would make plenty of sense for the Saints.
Romeo Doubs is a great trade target for Saints
The Green Bay Packers have a bunch of young, talented wide receivers. That's great until it's time to pay them all. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs were both drafted in 2022, so now they are entering the final year of their rookie deals. After using two high picks on receivers in this year's draft, Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, it's feasible that the Packers would be willing to trade one of them, and with Watson hurt, Doubs is the name to watch. He has a low salary this year, $3.406 million, so it's an easy contract to move.
According to Spotrac, Doubs is in line to get a four-year, $47.74 million contract ($11.9 million per season). The amount isn't prohibitive, but the Packers would be smart to prioritize other pieces—wide receiver is a truly unique position, where the optimal approach indicates paying top players, but not mid-level guys who are more replaceable.
Among all the receivers they have, Jayden Reed is the one more likely to get a long-term extension. If Reed is not going anywhere and Dontayvion Wicks is under contract through 2026, plus Golden and Williams entering the mix, securing and anticipating the pick in return for Doubs is a smart approach—even though they could probably get a 2027 compensatory pick for losing him in free agency next offseason.
New Orleans' need at wide receiver
Many folks thought New Orleans would address their WR need during the draft. They did not. The value just seemed to never line up for them where they were picking, so they continued to shift gears.
With that, they will need more talent at wideout. Chris Olave is an exciting option, but he has dealt with multiple concussions in recent years. Rashid Shaheed has emerged as a downfield threat, but he's returning from a season-ending injury. It is also worth noting that veteran WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling left New Orleans in free agency as well. He joined Klint Kubiak in Seattle with the Seahawks.
Brandin Cooks was a free-agent signing earlier in the offseason, but he also lacks size. None of those three wideouts are above six feet tall. As for Doubs, he is listed at 6'2 and could be a bigger-bodied option for Kellen Moore's offense.
I would imagine that a trade for Doubs wouldn't cost anything more than a late day three selection in next year's draft - or even potentially a pick swap. The price would not be high, and the Saints would have another depth piece for whoever plays QB in 2025.
