Saints defense catches unexpected break before NFC South matchup against Panthers

The New Orleans Saints are getting a tad lucky this weekend. Yes, you read that correctly. They will not have to worry about a dynamic piece to the Carolina Panthers offense that would have been quite difficult to game plan for, entering the divisional clash.

Panthers RB remains out

Panthers rookie running back Jonathon Brooks has not played this season, but he practiced all week. That being said, Panthers coach Dave Canales said the he will not play in Week 9 against New Orleans.

Saints rookie will get first taste of NFL action due to situation he never could have expected

Brooks was a highly-touted RB prospect in this year's draft class. Many scouts thought he was the best pure runner in the class.

Jonathon Brooks is a real gem in the 2024 NFL Draft pool. His evolution from a do-it-all high school athlete to a key contributor at Texas showcases his grit and versatility. On the field, Brooks is a threat with his quick cuts and ability to hit the hole hard. He's not just a ground-and-pound back; his hands and route-running make him a legit weapon in the passing game. That dual-threat capability is a big plus in today's NFL, where versatility out of the backfield is gold.

In the end, Brooks is a back with a ton of upside. He's a fit for various offensive schemes, able to zip through zones and bulldoze in power runs. For NFL teams hunting for a back who can mix it up both on the ground and in the air, Brooks is a solid bet. His trajectory at Texas, capped off with a standout season, paints the picture of a player who's just getting started and could make some serious waves in the NFL.

The Saints will not see Brooks in a game this season, luckily for them. It remains to be seen when the rookie will return for Carolina this season.

Saints LB may play

Nephi Sewell practiced in full all week for the Saints. He is listed as questionable for this weekend's matchup. He has not played yet this season after suffering a season-ending injury late last season.

If he can suit up, the Saints' linebacker depth gets another boost. he is one of their best special teams pieces and has experience on defense, too. Sewell is an athletic backer that the staff holds in high regards.

Keep an eye on his status before kickoff on Sunday.
