The NFL world got quite the shakeup this past weekend when New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr surprisingly announced his retirement from the league. For head coach Kellen Moore, this allows his tenure as the organization's leader to begin with a clean slate, in a way.
Kellen Moore never met Derek Carr in person this offseason
According to reports and Moore's recent comments, he actually never met with recently retired quarterback Derek Carr in person this offseason.
That's a bit of an unexpected detail that many fans were not aware of when Carr announced his choice. Feels like there was clear communication that no return from Carr was on the table, and the timing never worked earlier in the offseason.
Moore also praised Carr and his personal team for their communication in recent weeks and months. This decision was always a possibility, and Moore believes that Carr handled it correctly in order to help the team in a way.
"It was really good communication through the whole process as far as navigating this. Again, challenging circumstances with him being injured at the end of the year and just kind of navigating things throughout the whole offseason process.
I think Derek, the people that are part of his life communicated really well with the Saints. I think they've been really good with communication. I think it went the right way."

Carr's health and decision
The Saints also released a statement on Carr's retirement.
In that statement, they revealed that the team's medical staff discovered a lateral tear and significant degenerative changes to Carr's rotator cuff. It is a tough outcome for a veteran QB who probably did not expect this reality before last season began.
Regardless, the Saints must now adjust and look forward to the future at the QB position. Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener are the three QBs on the roster for New Orleans currently.
