The New Orleans Saints lost utility weapon Taysom Hill to a torn ACL in Week 13. He was carted off the field, and HC Darren Rizzi ruled him out for the remainder of the season earlier this week.
How will the Saints adjust their offense without him? Can they replace his production or his role? It won't be easy, and the staff understands that premise.
Kubiak on Taysom
Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak spoke with the media this week and shared his thoughts on the offense going forward without Taysom Hill. One of his statements stood out, in particular.
"You don't replace a Taysom Hill." -- Kubiak
Isn't that the cold, hard truth? Hill is one of the most unique athletes in football, and Kubiak saw some struggles on offense earlier this season when Taysom missed time with multiple ailments. Others will have to step up in his absence now.
Kubiak discussed his viewpoint on Hill's usage in late November. He felt that there should be no cap on how much Taysom was used.
"When he's been at his healthiest, we definitely want to use him to the max."
"We're ready for Taysom to play every play of the game."
-- Kubiak
Now, it's easy to give flak to Kubiak and the Saints with hindsight because Hill was hurt in Week 13. Injuries happen weekly, though, and you cannot avoid playing your top playmakers due to that constant in the NFL.
It was just tough luck for Hill and New Orleans against the Rams - plain and simple. They must now adjust the offense, and they could get two notable pieces back in Week 14.
Young running back Kendre Miller is set to be activated from injured reserve. He's practiced in full all week so far.
Meanwhile, star center Erik McCoy is on the right path to return from injury soon as well. McCoy missed Week 13 after returning the lineup in Week 12. He's practiced in limited fashion so far this week, but there seems to be positive indicators for his status.
We will find out for sure about both Miller and McCoy on Saturday, in all likelihood. Regardless, multiple players will need to step up without Taysom on the field.
