Running up the score as we count down the 37 days until kickoff
Football is officially back! It's just preseason, but the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions kicked off the preseason Thursday night. This is just one sign that meaningful football is mere days away. The New Orleans Saints open the season against the Arizona Cardinals in 37 days. To continue the countdown to kickoff, we reflect on Alvin Kamara's 37-yard touchdown catch versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
You know the play is a trip down memory lane when you see Alvin Kamara running a route down the field and lining up out wide. Hopefully those aspects of his game return under Kellen Moore. While Kamara has been a deadly receiver out of the backfield, his ability to run routes when split out has been discussed among fans more than it's actually been utilized.
This play was a strong reminder of what Kamara is capable of. It wasn't a complex route. It was a simple go route. While the route itself isn't memorable, everything else around the route was noteworthy.
This was the most unnecessary touchdown of Alvin Kamara's career
You could make an argument this was one of the most unnecessary touchdowns of Kamara's career. The Saints were blatantly running up the score and making no apologies about it. The Saints were already up 31 points in the fourth quarter and it was fourth down. The Saints could have easily punted the ball but instead kept their foot on the Eagles' neck.
The running back was lined up on the far right side of the field with Malcolm Jenkins in front of him. Kamara quickly beat Jenkins off the line, and Drew Brees put the ball right on Kamara. Jenkins was able to grab Kamara's waist, but Kamara didn't go down until after he crossed the goal line.
After the play, Jenkins flipped the bird in Sean Payton's direction. There was no animosity, but Payton was running up the score, and Jenkins let it happen. Jenkins started his career with New Orleans, and two years later, he was back in a Saints uniform to close his career.
