Saints Safety Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement

An NFL legend walks away after 12 seasons.

New Orleans Saints star safety Tyrann Mathieu has announced his retirement on Instagram.

Mathieu's retirement comes as a surprise, as the 33-year-old veteran was preparing for the 2025 NFL season. But the Louisiana legend has recently had a baby and is likely shifting his focus to his family.

The former LSU Tigers standout has had a decorated career in the NFL as a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro. Mathieu is also a Super Bowl winner as part of the Kansas City Chiefs' 2020 Super Bowl team.

The Saints' secondary was set with their veteran safety duo of Mathieu and Justin Reid, but Mathieu's surprising retirement creates more questions in an already questionable secondary. However, General Manager Mickey Loomis told the media that the team wasn't blindsided by the decision, and Mathieu told them in advance.

While the team will look towards finding the star safety's replacement, Mathieu's career is something to celebrate. Mathieu has embraced New Orleans since entering the league and considered joining the black and gold as a dream. Since joining the team back in 2022, he has played at a high level as a player, but has made a bigger impact as a person.

Mathieu has consistently been a leader on and off the field and made a huge impact on the community in New Orleans. From football camps to helping the less fortunate in times of need, he is walking away from the game a New Orleans legend with a significant impact on the city.
