San Francisco 49ers Make An Important Free Agent Signing

It was clear that the San Francisco 49ers were going to make an addition to their wide receiver room after insider Matt Maiocco reported that they had a tryout with six wide receivers.

And they certainly needed one after injuries, suspensions, and contract drama have completely depleted their wide receiver room.

Well, just ahead of the start of training camp on Tuesday July 22, 2025, the 49ers signed one of those receivers, Equanimeous St. Brown, to their 90-man roster.

St. Brown, the brother of Detroit Lions superstar wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is set to immediately compete for playing time in a very depleted 49ers wide receiver room.

Saints release Equanimeous St. Brown, a likely pickup for the practice squad

St. Brown Gives the 49ers Veteran Stability

The 49ers likely chose St. Brown because he is a six-year NFL veteran who has experience being a starter.

Several of the other receivers that the 49ers worked out are younger and theoretically have higher ceilings, but the 49ers have plenty of youth in their receiver room currently and don’t need to take any more risks.

Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins are two young 49ers receivers that have both shown promise. Ricky Pearsall is also a young receiver in a prove-it year. The 49ers don’t need any more projects. They need veteran stability to fall back on if their rookie receivers don’t pan out or if Pearsall or Brandon Aiyuk‘s injuries are worse than the Niners fear.

They went after the most proven receiver given who was available and cheap this late into the offseason. I personally said they should sign Brandon Powell, who is more proven than St. Brown, but that was just based on St. Brown’s body of work.

Evidently, St. Brown impressed at the workout, and that coupled with his body of work, similar to Powell’s, inspired them to give him a chance.

NFL fans are happy to see the St. Brown brothers back together in the NFL again, and hope to see them match up once again, potentially in an NFC playoff rematch between the Lions and 49ers in 2025.

Jauan Jennings Encouraging Update

One reason that 49ers fans felt they needed another receiver was because of the Jauan Jennings contract drama.

Jennings is requesting a new contract for the 49ers ahead of this season or a trade. He broke out with the 49ers last season, recording 975 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns.

But fortunately for 49ers fans, Jennings appears willing to play for the 49ers regardless of how the negotiations go.

49ers insider Nick Wagoner reported that Jauan Jennings reported to camp and is set to  participate in practice.

“WR Jauan Jennings reported to camp on Monday,” Wagoner wrote in a post on X. “He’s expected to be at practice and participate on Wednesday when practice begins. Lynch declines to say whether there are contract discussions, repeating ‘We love him and he’s here.’”

The 49ers seem likely to extend Jennings eventually based on their rhetoric that they have no plans to trade him. But it’s comforting to know that the guy who is their incumbent No. 1 wide receiver heading into the season is gearing up for 2025 despite the contract dispute.
