For six years, running back Saquon Barkley was easily one of the favorite players for NY Giants fans to shower with love at MetLife Stadium. Now, though, things are a bit different due to him suiting up for the Philadelphia Eagles.
This is something No. 26 is fully aware of, as he's already dealt with a ton of hate from Big Blue supporters this offseason. It all started the second it was announced he was signing a three-year, $37.75 million contract with Philly.
With that said, Barkley isn't letting the off-field drama bring him down. In an interview with NJ.com, Barkley was asked about the 'beef' with people in New York, plus the comments that would surely be on the way following the release of Hard Knocks. Barkley's response was both professional and respectful, which was expected.
"I don’t care when Giants fans talk bad about me. It’s sad. If I do respond, it’s more for an educational purpose because it’s a business. A lot of people don’t get that side. It’s not just in football, but it can happen in any workplace. It’s tough. Obviously, people can say what they want to say. They’re going to talk good about you, or they’re talking bad about you. When I respond, or if I ever try to, it’s more for the educational purpose: to let you guys understand that my hands are tied and there was nothing I could do."
- Saquon Barkley told NJ.com
Barkley has said from the start that a new offer was never put on the table from the Giants. In the first episode of Hard Knocks, Joe Schoen said he wasn't going to franchise tag him and it was made pretty obvious that he undervalued how much Barkley would be worth in free agency.
We still haven't found out if Barkley gave the Giants a chance to match Philly's offer, but that answer should be coming soon. As for Barkley, he's fired up over his future with the Eagles and a strong 2024 campaign should be on the way. We wish him well, but just like Kayvon Thibodeaux, we hope Barkley plays well in 15 games, but doesn't do too hot when he takes on the G-Men.
