Debuting in late 2022, Fire Country follows prisoner Bode Donovan who joins an unorthodox early-release program that allows him to volunteer as a firefighter in Northern California and work with trained experts to battle massive blazes. With its mix of drama, action, and procedural elements, Fire Country grabbed the attention of viewers during its first season and already has major franchise potential.

Despite only garnering a paltry 50% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, and an even less impressive 45% audience score, Fire Country season 1 did good business for CBS and the network quickly renewed it for seasons 2 and 3. As the spinoff continues to take shape before its 2025-2026 TV season debut, the latest news confirms two new cast members have joined Sheriff Country. Both cast in series regular roles, Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs) and Michele Weaver (Love Ishave been added to the expanding ensemble alongside Morena Baccari and Diane Farr. Gorham is set to play Travis, Mickey's ex-husband with whom she shares a daughter. Despite their separation, Mickey and Travis have bonded over their mutual mission to help their daughter kick drugs. Meanwhile, Cassidy is a young deputy in Edgewater.

After CBS introduced the Sheriff Mickey Fox character in Fire Country season 2, it was only a matter of time before the network's plans for a spinoff came to fruition. In May 2024, CBS officially gave Sheriff Country a season order that will see it arrive as part of the 2025-2026 season. This news comes mere weeks after the announcement of Fire Country season 3, proving the show is already blossoming into a bona fide franchise after only a few years on the air.

The series took the next big step in January 2025 when it was announced that Sheriff Country had finally begun filming. Though a release date is not known yet, Sheriff Country will be part of CBS' fall slate alongside Fire Country. Instead of being a midseason addition, the high-profile spinoff will fill one of the newly vacated slots left by the cancellation of S.W.A.T.FBI: International, and FBI: Most Wanted.

Morena Baccarin will headline the series as Sheriff Mickey, but she isn't the only star attached thus far. Based on the comments of Diane Farr, it's been confirmed that Mickey's step-sister, Sharon, will appear in the spinoff, but the scope of her role is unknown. W. Earl Brown (Deadwood) is set to play Mickey's father (and Sharon's step-father) Wes, while Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs) will play Mickey's ex-husband, Travis. Mickey and Travis share a daughter, but the role hasn't been cast yet. Michele Weaver (Love Is) will play a young deputy named Cassidy.
