As we get deeper into the college hockey season, some players are worth watching to see if the Canadiens should be interested. One of those players is Lukas Sillinger, brother of Cole and Mike is his father.
Players from hockey families get it. It doesn’t necessarily make them better on the ice but they do understand what it takes to be a pro by watching their family members and there is great value in that.
The 5’11” forward is a part of a very good Arizona State University team. He’s having his best season. Sillinger currently has eight goals and 24 assists in 28 games. He doesn’t take dumb penalties and at 24, he will help Laval next year and then the Canadiens can see what they have in him. Adding AHL depth is never bad.
According to InStat, he’s winning 44% of his puck battles and he’s getting 20% defensive zone starts. He tracks for a bottom six player and his time in Arizona has been a good development year.
Sillinger knows how to fill the lane on the rush. On the power play, he handles the puck well and can pass or shoot and he’s very tricky at it. He hasn’t shot a ton this year because he’s playing a role. There have been other seasons where he’s taken more shots so that’s in his game as well.
I think he’s a player signing to a short-term deal or an invite if nobody else signs him. There is a pedigree here and he’s been getting better every year.
