Should the New York Rangers attempt to trade for Ryan McDonagh?
According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, McDonagh could possibly be on the move again just one year after being traded from the Nashville Predators to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
This past season, the 36-year-old defenseman played in all 82 games for the Lightning, recording four goals, 27 assists, and 31 points while averaging 20:22 minutes.
McDonagh may not be what he used to be, but he showed that he can still be an impactful defenseman even at his age.
It would certainly be a feel-good story to see McDonagh back with the Blueshirts as he played with the team from 2010 to 2018, and he served as the captain from 2014 to 2018.
On top of the heartwarming element to it, McDonagh would help stabilize the Rangers’ blueline and bring a strong veteran presence to the locker room.
McDonagh is set to earn $6.75 million this upcoming season, which makes trading for him a little more difficult due to the Rangers' limited cap space
However, he’s under contract for just one more season, making him an attainable short-term option for the Rangers.
If McDonagh is truly on the trade block, Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury should at least look into acquiring him.
