Sonja Morgan has always been a Real Housewives of New York franchise staple. Between her outlandish lifestyle, chipping her tooth on a stripper’s shirt, and performing her own burlesque, she was a pip. Even Sonja’s famed townhome earned a place in the Bravo history books. But now that it is sold and Sonja has packed her bags for the Sunshine State, it feels like the end of an era.
A plethora of interns, like Pickles, earned their bread and butter at the New York City establishment. They didn’t learn fundamental business skills but rather how to wash thongs in a bidet. But according to Sonja, these life lessons were just a necessity, especially if you wanted to live in New York City. At the townhouse, we learned that Sonja had a real knack for DIY projects, including cleaning the coy pond in the garden. The 4,650-square-foot, five-story home became an institution for Real Housewives of New York fans. It not only housed Sonja but also opened its doors to Tinsley Mortimer when she needed a place to stay.
Between 2010 and 2021, Sonja held multiple chaotic brunches at her home. But perhaps the biggest moment was watching Sonja develop her toaster oven recipes from the lavish townhouse during her tenure. Fans were quite surprised that Sonja could cook and that she didn’t choose to use her state-of-the-art kitchen. As news came that the home was sold, memories came rushing back, and as a fan, it left me sad. Sonja and that house were one, and it once represented a lavish life for Sonja, but it was time for her to move on.
In May, Sonja told Page Six, “It’s time to do me,” when asked why she was finally pushing for a sale. Even though Sonja had multiple creative sparks at her longtime home, she told the outlet “a weight lifted off her shoulders” once she had unloaded the property. The blonde added, “This cherished home has been the heart of memories for our family for decades. Now, as we move forward, it is time for someone else to build their own memories here, just as we did. I know now was the time for this beautiful townhouse on the Upper East Side to embark on its next chapter.”
The next chapter for Sonja is all about creativity. She shared with readers, “I’ll always be a New Yorker at heart but to be able to travel with my Sonja In Your City Improv Comedy tour freely. It facilitates my creativity towards my other important endeavors as well. Wherever I go I go.” For the 60-year-old, the time for change was now, but she understood the momentous decision she was making. Sonja bought the home in 1990 with her ex, John Adams Morgan, for $9.1 million. She sold it for $4.45 million.
I’m not totally surprised that Sonja has chosen to move her life to Flordia. The weather is warm, and the drinks and good times are always flowing. It probably helps that her two best friends, Luann de Lesseps and Ramona Singer, also party down south. Sonja is now a resident of West Palm Beach, where she bought a condominium on the waterfront on Flagler Drive. According to the Palm Beach Post, Sonja paid $600,000 for the 1,700-square-foot condominium in March. Like Sonja, the new pad is bright, cheery, and perfect for a fresh start.
While fans are happy for her, it is still tough to reconcile that Sonja won’t be in the Big Apple anymore. However, her spinoff, Welcome to Crappie Lake, did very well in the ratings, so maybe we will get to see her traveling the country again soon. When it came to Sonja, she was the perfect Bravoleb. She was so completely self-aware and often acted like a crazy, wealthy old woman. It was just always the most glorious trainwreck I’ve ever witnessed watching her live her life. I couldn’t get enough of Sonja or her beloved home. So later, I’ll raise a glass in honor of Bravo’s Sonja Era.
