Stanley Cup contender quietly pursued Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman, per report

Even after a tough campaign, Swayman was reportedly on Edmonton’s radar as they weighed options in net

Jeremy Swayman didn’t have the kind of season Bruins fans expected, but that didn’t stop one of the league’s top contenders from asking about him.

According to NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Edmonton Oilers made an inquiry about Swayman during the 2024-25 campaign—after he had already signed his extension in Boston.

Edmonton inquired about Jeremy Swayman this season, well after he signed his deal with Boston, but with how much Stuart Skinner gets criticized, Stu seems to be doing fine in net for the Oilers

Pagnotta’s report suggests Edmonton was exploring ways to strengthen their goaltending, especially as questions around Stuart Skinner’s consistency loomed large for most of the year.

Edmonton’s crease looked shaky early before Skinner turned things around

During the regular season, Skinner posted a .896 save percentage with a 2.81 goals-against average, numbers that sparked concern, particularly for a team built to contend now.

At the time, it made sense that the Oilers would do their due diligence on potential upgrades.

But when the postseason arrived, Skinner answered the bell. He delivered a solid stretch of play, putting up a 6-4 record with a 2.53 GAA, a .906 save percentage, and three shutouts through 10 playoff games.

His resurgence helped settle the situation, for now.

Tough season aside, Swayman’s history still draws attention

Swayman’s overall numbers from this season tell a tough story: a 22-29-7 record in 58 games, a 3.11 goals-against average, a .892 save percentage, and four shutouts.

Not ideal, especially for someone the Bruins had counted on to be their No. 1. But the Anchorage native has built a reputation as one of the NHL’s most reliable young goalies.

From 2020-21 through 2023-24, Swayman posted a .914 save percentage or better in each season.

In 2022-23, he earned the William M. Jennings Trophy alongside Linus Ullmark, awarded to the goaltending duo that allowed the fewest goals in the league.

Those previous seasons still carry weight with front offices, and likely played a role in Edmonton’s midseason interest.

Will the Oilers revisit Swayman this summer?

Now that Skinner has quieted critics with his postseason performance, the Oilers may not feel immediate pressure to make a move. But if they fall short of a championship, or lose confidence in their long-term goalie outlook, they could circle back.

As for Boston, the offseason promises change.

If the Bruins decide to reshape their core, Swayman could find himself back in trade conversations.

While there’s no deal imminent, Edmonton’s previous inquiry shows the door isn’t closed.

And in a league where goaltending can make or break a season, the phones never stay quiet for long.
