Strange New Worlds Showrunner Teases New Star Trek Spinoff Set on the Legendary Enterprise

During the June red carpet premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, series showrunner Akiva Goldsman hinted at developing a reboot of the original Star Trek series after his current show comes to an end. With Strange New Worlds coming to an end after Season 5, interest in the previously mentioned series has piqued.Speaking to Trek Movie, Goldsman said he wasn't joking about another Star Trek series set on the U.S.S. Enterprise. "Let me put it this way... I certainly wouldn't say no [to a follow-up show set on the Enterprise]," he explained. However, Goldsman stressed that in order for anything to happen, he would have to pitch the idea to the bosses at Paramount.

"There’s a lot of asking... [co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers] and I would do it until they put us out to pasture, until we were like mumbling bad title sequences, because we love the show," Goldsman continued. "And so, if we can convince people to give us an opportunity to continue these missions, of course. Nothing would make us happier. And, when the time comes, we will certainly try."

Goldsman previously talked about the future of the Enterprise at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Strange New Worlds Season 3, where he touched on how the story will lead into the fifth and final season. "How do they become who they are? What happens to some of them? Those are questions that we knew we needed to answer and promised to answer. And so that's our five-year plan," he said. "And then we run into TOS. But they're not dying. And we have those sets."

Series star Rebecca Romijn, who plays Una Chin-Riley in Strange New Worlds, previously revealed how the cast found out that the show would be ending after its fifth season. "I think we're very grateful to get to complete our five-year mission, which was the original plan," she said. "Not all shows get five seasons. So, I think the fact that we know ahead of time, and we're able to wrap up all the storylines for everybody. I think we're really thrilled to have a Season 5 and finish it up."

The Future of Star Trek

With the showrunner teasing a possible TOS-era show, it remains to be seen if Romijn's character will be part of it. The character was first introduced as Captain Pike's first officer in the original Star Trek pilot. At the time, Number One was portrayed by Majel Barrett. Barrett, who was married to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, would become a recurring character in Star Trek, but not as Number One. Barrett played Nurse Chapel throughout the series' run and would reprise the role in brief appearances in other Star Trek projects.
