The San Francisco Giants have acquired Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. Of course, that's not the first big move, especially with the Golden Knights lurking.
The Boston Red Sox just can't help themselves. They traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. In return, they got Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs, and Jose Bello.
That's like Kelly McCrimmon deciding to trade Jack Eichel to the San Jose Sharks. You're trading your best player and punting on an opportunity to win a championship in the future.
Fans would riot on the Las Vegas Strip. People would call for McCrimmon's head, asking him to resign. It's something that Bill Foley doesn't want to see. Therefore, he's not willing to tempt fate.
But that doesn't mean that it isn't a pivotal summer for the Vegas Golden Knights. They're watching their division rivals square off in the Stanley Cup Final and must respond in kind. You don't think McCrimmon is watching for nothing, are you?
The Golden Knights must look at all options on the table, including Mitch Marner. Yes, I bet you're sick and tired of hearing about that guy. However, he's been linked to Vegas since last year.
In fact, it's one of his preferred destinations, alongside Florida. Imagine if one of those teams got a hold of Marner in the offseason. It would make the collective heads of all the "no state income tax teams win everything" crowd explode. Then, the torches and pitchforks would come out.
Looking at the Boston Red Sox in the past few years, you'll see a team that has surprisingly been sellers. They've traded away Mookie Betts (by far, the dumbest decision ever), Chris Sale, and watched Xander Bogaerts sign with the San Diego Padres.
Suddenly, John Henry has gone from wanting a winning team to becoming apathetic towards winning. If you know one thing about Bostonians, it's that they care about their sports teams. A lot.
You'll know that by listening to them talk about Tom Brady until they're blue in the face. The same applies to David Ortiz and the 2004 Red Sox. Purposefully trading away big stars will get your head served on a silver platter in Beantown.
Kelly McCrimmon must look at what the Red Sox are doing and see that as a cautionary tale. Sure, there might be some pricey contracts to deal with, specifically with Eichel's incoming deal. However, the alternative is much worse.
"Do I really want the fanbase turning on a sweet old man like Bill Foley?"
It's no wonder that McCrimmon and the Golden Knights talked about making Eichel a top priority this offseason. There's no way he's having Foley mentioned in the same air as Henry. You don't want to be known as a cheapskate, do you?
One thought ran through my mind this weekend. It involved investing in the right products. Cheaper items break down and aren't as useful. Sometimes, you must go all-out in getting the right move for your team.
Could that be Marner or another superstar? Who knows. One thing's certain, though. McCrimmon and Foley aren't being cheap.
